Bougainvillea Safari Lodge was founded by a local farmer and a chef who saw the potential for a...... guesthouse in Karatu. They applied for a government loan, and their application was approved. Shortly thereafter, this 32-room lodge was built near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The lodge has strong ties to the community, and a portion of the profits goes toward supporting the local community. All the staff are originally from the Ethiopian highlands (they belong to the Iraqw tribe), but have been living in Karatu for some time. The last time we visited, it was clear that the staff are very proud of the lodge and the level of community engagement.
Overview.
On previous visits, we’ve found Bougainvillea Safari Lodge to be generally very quiet, but it felt a bit hectic when we last visited in February 2018. The bungalows are very simple, perhaps a bit worn in places, but comfortable and clean. The gardens are very well maintained, and the pool looked incredibly inviting. While it may not be the highlight of your trip, this is a good option for families and those on a budget.
Accommodation
We have thirty-two cottages set throughout our lushly landscaped property. Ten rooms in five double cottages are located in our coffee garden. The rest of the rooms are located surrounding the pool area.
Each cosy room has mosquito-netted king or twin beds, dressing area, a fireplace, large bathroom with shower and a veranda from which to enjoy the views of our lush tropical gardens. Triples are possible with prior notice and two of the cottages can be used as family suites, with connecting rooms.
